Atlas and host-city draw

Where the people listed in a program come from, by the institution they gave, with the host city marked. Then, for every convention, how much of the program came from near the city that hosted it.

Each dot is an institution, sized by its listings that year. The map shows institutions in the contiguous US with IPEDS coordinates: 3,186 of the 3,460 listings in 2017. Alaska, Hawaii, territories, institutions outside the US, and affiliations with no match are not on the map. Distances are straight lines from the host city to each institution.

How much of each program came from near the host city

Share of listings, among institutions with coordinates, within 300 km and within 800 km of the host city, and the median distance. The virtual years have no host. San Francisco (2005, 2009) and Chicago (1998, 2006, 2023) repeat, which makes the comparison cleaner.
