How to read these numbers

The reader counts what the printed proceedings list. It does not count who attended, and it cannot see changes made after a volume was printed.

What is counted

  • A listing is one person in one role in one session.
  • A volume is one year's proceedings. Some print full papers, some a program or schedule only, some an abstract book. The 1989 volume is an agenda with workshop facilitators listed as roles. A session marked as program-only is on the printed program but has no paper in the volume.
  • People are names joined on an exact match. The CPTSC corpus has had no reviewed merges, so one person printed with two spellings counts twice.
  • An institution is matched when the printed affiliation is identical to one the CCCC, IWAC or Computers and Writing reader already matched. CPTSC institutions were not run through ROR themselves. The share outside the US uses only matched institutions.
  • A person page exists only for people listed at two or more meetings. The 1999 volume does not count toward that, because it is the noisiest OCR scan. The other scanned volumes (1974 to 2004) were read by OCR and checked by hand against their contents, and they do count.

Where the series break

  • 1976: no volume in the capture
  • 2020: no volume captured
  • 1974 to 2004: scanned volumes were read by OCR and checked by hand against the contents
  • 1997 to 2001: the contents print names only, so institutions come from each paper's byline
  • 2009: a third of the listings carry no institution
  • 2016: the conference was cancelled for Hurricane Matthew; the proceedings were still published

How each year was read

1974
A proceedings volume of edited talks. It prints no program, so there are no days or times. Institutions come from each paper's byline. Read from a scan.
1975
A proceedings volume of panels. Speakers are printed as bare names, so their institutions come from the participants list. Contributors to the discussion are not listed.
1977
A proceedings volume of edited talks. It prints no program, so there are no days or times.
1978
A proceedings volume of edited talks, with no program. Three graduate students from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute gave oral presentations, according to a footnote, but their titles are not printed and they are not entered here.
1979
A proceedings volume with a printed program. Five sessions are in the program only: the volume has no paper for them.
1980
A proceedings volume with no table of contents and no program. Sessions were found by their headings, so completeness is less certain than in other years. One presenter has no institution anywhere in the volume.
1981
A proceedings volume with a printed program. Two sessions are in the program only, with no paper in the volume.
1982
A proceedings volume with a program. One session is in the program only.
1983
A proceedings volume with a program. Two sessions are in the program only.
1984
A proceedings volume with a program. Four sessions are in the program only. The times are program blocks shared by several speakers, not a time for each paper.
1985
A proceedings volume with a program. Four sessions are in the program only. Read from a scan.
1986
The meeting was six panels. Each panel is one session here, and the paper each person wrote is kept on that person's row.
1987
A proceedings volume of fifteen-minute talks with a program. Eight sessions are in the program only, with no paper in the volume.
1988
A workshop meeting: two position papers, a president's address and four workshop reports. Facilitators and summary reporters are listed as roles. Two sessions are in the program only.
1989
The volume is an agenda, minutes and a proposal, with no papers. Only a panel of four has presenters. The eight workshops list facilitators as roles and have no presenters, and some of the pre-registered names print a home address instead of an institution.
1990
A proceedings volume. Three items are in the program only: a paper by Hackos, a report of the Program Review Board and the president's address.
1991
Three people on the program have no paper in the volume and no printed title. Their sessions are titled by the program's session heading.
1992
Two people on the program have no paper in the volume and no printed title. Their sessions are titled by the program's session heading.
1993
Four items are in the program only, among them a panel called Corporate Visions. The institutions of two of the people were read from the list of conferees.
1994
The banquet panel is in the program only, and no title is printed for it. Two papers marked as withdrawn in the program are left out.
1996
Read from a scan that lost most of the spaces, so names come from the printed program. The scan is out of order, which makes page numbers less certain. The closing discussion session has no speakers.
1997
The contents print names only, so institutions come from the byline on each paper's first page. The program was not read, so there are no moderators, rooms or times.
1998
The contents print names only, so institutions come from each paper's byline. The program was not read, so there are no moderators, rooms or times. The Distinguished Service Awards are not sessions.
1999
The noisiest scan in the set: letters are misread and titles needed repair. Two award acceptances are left out. Because of the noise, this year does not count toward person pages. There are no moderators.
2000
The contents print names only, so institutions come from each paper's byline. The scan is out of order, so some page numbers are estimates. There are no moderators.
2001
The contents print names only, so institutions come from each paper's byline. There are no moderators, rooms or times.
2002
Institutions come from bylines and from the printed program, which also supplies rooms, days, times and some moderators.
2003
The volume is one-page position statements, several to a page. Moderators come from the contents. Posters shown in the schedule are not in the contents and are not entered.
2004
Read from a scan. The schedule was not read, so there are no moderators, rooms or times. Two panel statements print no title and no authors in the contents, and they are not entered.
2005
Sessions, rooms and times come from the printed schedule, which lists some papers that never reached the proceedings. Five invited panelists in session 4C print no institution.
2006
The contents do not list the papers, so papers were found by their Keywords lines. Completeness rests on that count. Three plenary speakers have no paper title.
2007
The contents give moderators. The schedule prints times and buildings for each slot but not for each session, so rooms and times are not entered.
2008
Sessions come from the printed schedule. The editors' roundtable lists editors with their journals, not institutions.
2009
A one-day meeting. The contents print names only, and institutions were read from the paper bylines. Nine of 31 listings have no institution anywhere in the volume.
2010
The opening events were entered by hand from the contents page. Where several names share one printed institution, all of them get it.
2011
The contents list 25 panels and no keynote. Panel 2A has nine presenters and no titles. A few names carry typos in the print, and they appear here as printed.
2013
Sessions come from the printed schedule. A moderator's institution is copied from that person's presenter row where there is one. The editors' forum lists journals in place of institutions.
2014
Read from the program by font. The editors' round table lists editors without pairing them to journals. Eight listings carry no institution.
2016
The meeting was cancelled for Hurricane Matthew, and the proceedings were published anyway. Session 1B has no presenters, because its speakers are named only inside the abstract. A few presenters may be missing where bylines follow the abstract. The day headings print the year as 2015.
2017
A flat contents list. Some page numbers were lost in the print and come from a title search.
2018
The editors' round table is one entry that lists journals in place of institutions.
2021
An online meeting. The volume is an abstract book, and its contents list titles and authors.
2024
An abstract book. The editors' roundtable lists editors with their journals, not institutions.
2025
An abstract book. The editors' roundtable lists editors with their journals, not institutions.

Caveats

This is a draft built from the proceedings PDFs on cptsc.org, which state no license. Permission for reuse is being sought from CPTSC. Some volumes print no moderators (1997 to 2001, 2004), some print no institution for part of their listings (2009 is missing a third), and a name that carries no institution is joined to others only by spelling, so common names may be joined wrongly. The papers' texts and abstracts are not shown or republished here. Check any figure you plan to publish against the session pages.
