Conferences, cities and themes
The 31 Computers and Writing conferences in the corpus, 1984 to 2024, with the site printed on each program's title page and what the program lets us read.
The conference has met every year since 1984 except 1987 and 1988 (not in the corpus). Each program was read by a parser written for that year's layout, so the notes below say where the reading is weak. A site is blank where the program's title page does not print one.
| Year | Site | Notes | Sessions | People |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Fort Worth, Texas | This schedule came from the conference organizers, not the Digital Press book. It lists each session's time, room and title but names no presenters for the concurrent sessions, so only the opening town hall panelists and the two keynote speakers appear as people. The schedule prints no session codes, so the codes here (A-01 and so on) are local identifiers, not citations. | 72 | 10
This program came from the conference organizers, not the Digital Press book. It prints no chairs, and the program prints no city or host institution. Session codes A.07, E.05, F.04, G.01, H.04, AS.21 and AS.23 are not printed. Asynchronous sessions have no time or room. | 101 | 250 |
Greenville, North Carolina | Practicing Digital Activisms This program came from the conference organizers, not the Digital Press book. It prints names only, with no institutions and no chairs, so every listing here has no institution. The keynote's institution appears only in his biography and is not taken from it. | 132 | 426
East Lansing, Michigan | The program prints names only, with no institutions and no chairs. Poster presentations are one merged session. | 121 | 378
Fairfax, Virginia | The program prints names only, with no institutions. Poster presentations are one merged session. | 145 | 443
123 | 418 | |
Paper titles and presenter lines are separate lists, so a few sessions have no paper-to-person pairing. The Thursday workshops are not included. | 115 | 352 |
The program prints no session types, and prints a chair as a bare name. | 114 | 351 |
Raleigh, North Carolina | Read from an OCR'd scan with letter errors in names, titles and rooms. The program prints no session codes, so the codes here (A-01, TH-I and so on) are local identifiers, not citations. | 135 | 402
The program prints no chairs, only discussion leaders and town-hall moderators. | 166 | 491 |
West Lafayette, Indiana | The Thursday workshops and two featured sessions are not included. Poster presentations are one merged session. | 140 | 426
The Thursday workshops (about eight to ten sessions) are not included. | 72 | 239 |
Read from an OCR'd scan. About a quarter of the listings print no institution, and OCR damage to session codes was repaired by running order. | 71 | 269 |
Read from an OCR'd scan. Names and institutions carry recognition errors, and the authors of a paper are split by a rule of thumb. | 71 | 237 |
The program prints names only, with no institutions. | 77 | 214 |
About a tenth of the listings print no institution, and many panels are marked self-moderated. | 73 | 208 |
78 | 200 | |
Most panels print no moderator. | 98 | 291 |
Normal, Illinois | The program prints no institutions for paper presenters; the few institutions here come from workshop facilitator lists. Some workshops list coordinators but no presenters. | 104 | 345
The program prints names only, with no institutions anywhere. | 87 | 278 |
Read from a scan. Sessions B7, B8 and the film session are missing from the extracted text. | 79 | 274 |
Rapid City, South Dakota | The program prints no institutions for session participants, so almost every listing here has none. | 67 | 189
Gainesville, Florida | Read from a scan. Sessions C7, F3, G5 and H5 were not captured, and the Town Hall participants print e-mail addresses instead of institutions. | 66 | 210
Read from a very noisy scan. About 20 to 25 sessions are missing or merged, and the program prints no chairs. Treat every row as a draft. | 87 | 222 |
Read from a scan with damaged session headers, so many codes come from the slot header plus a running count. Workshop W3 is missing. | 90 | 251 |
Read from a scan. Codes in several slots are assigned by order within the slot, because the program prints the labels in a block before the sessions. A few person and title pairings are off where columns interleaved. | 74 | 266 |
Austin, Texas | Read from a scan; keynotes were assembled by hand. | 29 | 144
Read from a scan. The D time slot prints no time, and the keynote and optional talks were assembled by hand. | 33 | 106 |
Read from a scan. Session 13 is missing from the capture, and the program prints equipment codes where later programs print rooms. | 37 | 137 |
Read from a badly degraded scan. Some affiliations are only a city, because that is all the program prints. | 28 | 83 |
Minneapolis, Minnesota | The first Computers and Writing conference. Read from a scan; the program prints no chairs. | 19 | 57
